In other words, it's not only what you build (stronger tissue), but also what you practice (your brain sending stronger, cleaner signals to your muscles). That repeated practice strengthens the "neuromuscular connection," meaning your brain and body communicate faster and more efficiently under load.

•Arousal was the key concept he tied to brain protection — Galpin used "arousal" in the neurological sense — the degree to which your nervous system is activated and alert. Restoring strength in a structured way makes daily movement easier, improves confidence, and stops ordinary tasks from placing excessive stress on your body. This approach keeps training simple, repeatable, and effective instead of overwhelming.

Click below to read more.

1. Build training around strength and coordination, not burnout -- Stop chasing sweat, soreness, or long workouts. The 3-by-5 framework eliminates decision fatigue: train three to five days per week, pick three to five exercises, perform three to five sets of three to five reps each. Every variable falls in the same range. If you're unsure, start with three of everything and add only when you're ready. Choose a weight where reps one to three feel controlled and reps four to five require genuine concentration.

You should finish thinking "I could maybe do one more," not "I have nothing left." If you fail mid-set, the weight is too heavy for this protocol. Then rest fully before the next set. This combination strengthens your muscles and sharpens the brain-to-muscle signal at the same time. To find your starting weight for any exercise, begin with what feels almost too light and add weight in small increments.

Stop when the fifth rep requires genuine effort but you maintain good form. That's your working weight for week one. Good form means controlling the weight through its full range of motion, without momentum, jerking, or compensation from other body parts. If you have to swing, heave, or twist to complete a rep, the weight is too heavy. When you can complete all five sets of five reps with a given weight, add the smallest increment available (often 2.5 to 5 pounds) at your next session. Expect to drop back to three to four reps initially.

This cycle of reaching a target, adding weight, and rebuilding is how strength accumulates over months. If life gets chaotic, a single 15-minute session with three exercises is infinitely better than skipping entirely. Strength training should feel effortful during the session but allow you to recover quickly enough to repeat it. Galpin explained that strength improves when muscles work close to their capacity for short periods, followed by adequate rest. This sends a clear signal to your body to build stronger tissue and improve coordination. Long intense workouts, extreme fatigue, and high-volume routines dilute this signal.

• The 3-by-5 protocol is a practical way to get started -- Galpin described the 3-by-5 approach as a way to control training frequency, volume, intensity, and rest without complexity. This framework involves:
◦Training three to five days per week
◦Performing three to five exercises
◦Using three to five sets and repetitions
◦Maintaining deliberate rest periods long enough to preserve strength and coordination between sets

Whether you use machines, body weight, or simple movements at home, the underlying benefit remains the same: you challenge your ability to produce force. This flexibility empowers you to build strength without needing perfect conditions or elite tools.

• Neurological demand explains why strength training supports brain health -- Strength training requires coordinated signaling between your brain and muscles. When you lift something heavy, your brain sends electrical signals through nerves to recruit muscle fibers. The heavier the load, the more fibers your brain need to coordinate simultaneously — like a conductor bringing in more sections of an orchestra.

This repeated practice of "loud, clear signals" strengthens the neural pathways themselves, not just the muscles. This constant demand reinforces motor control, reaction speed, and cognitive engagement. Grip strength, in particular, reflects overall neurological and physical strength because your hands require precise control from your brain."

                                                                           _________________
My aim - mission - vision, is seeing all of us take ownership of augmenting our own health and wellness in every way we can. What often gets blamed on aging or poor conditioning has a simpler explanation.

Human performance scientist Andy Galpin put it directly in a recent conversation on The Line with Dr. Kristen Holmes: strength isn't a fitness goal — it's a foundational requirement for normal human function. His point was not about fitness trends or athletic performance. It was about how your body is designed to interact with the physical world — and what happens when that capacity diminishes. When strength declines, ordinary movement demands far more effort than it should.

Despite this, strength training is still widely misunderstood. Many people associate it with aesthetics, intimidation, or extremes that feel inaccessible. That misunderstanding keeps people from addressing one of the most practical levers they have for preserving independence, mental sharpness, and physical resilience. Strength is not a niche pursuit. It's a baseline skill.

Clarifying what strength really is — and how little it takes to rebuild it — changes the entire conversation. Once the noise and myths are stripped away, what remains is a straightforward path forward that prioritizes function, consistency, and progress over intensity for its own sake, using a simple 3-by-5 framework that removes guesswork and focuses on what actually restores strength."

Did you know?

Strength loss, not poor cardio fitness, is often why everyday tasks feel exhausting and stressful as you age, even if you stay active

Strength training supports far more than muscle, helping stabilize mood, sharpen thinking, protect bones, and improve how your body handles daily physical demands

Want more of this article? Check out part 2 here from the March 2026 archives
                                                                              ________________
My aim - mission - vision, is seeing all of us take ownership of augmenting our own health and wellness in every way we can. Northern Asia has similar weather, being in the northern hemisphere. The study of the seasons & cycles in nature was the foundation for the theory of Yin & Yang in Chinese Medicine.

Ancient doctors observed how weather, seasons & the external environment affect our health. They knew thousands of years ago that during the fall & winter, respiratory illnesses increase if you fall out of balance with nature. But if you harmonize with nature you can experience vitality and strong health throughout the cold months.

This is why Traditional Chinese Medicine has many common sense home remedies for staying healthy during different seasons. I want to share the most important ones with you, so that you can benefit from these and hopefully avert falling ill this winter.

Tip #1 Avoid eating an excessive amount of cold and raw foods, including cold drinks, salads & smoothies. The key word here is "excessive." For someone with weak Spleen Qi or too much dampness, they may not be able to tolerate more than one or two fruits a day. While someone with a more robust Spleen & more heat in their system may benefit from more salads & raw fruits.

Tip #2 Eat warm, cooked foods, including soups & stews. A little bit of spice is good, particularly ginger, garlic & cinnamon. If your sinuses or head feels congested from cold, then chilli peppers & spring onions can help open the sinuses & disperse the cold-damp.

Tip #3 If you’re prone to catching colds, keep your feet, ankles, lower back, neck & ears warm & protected from the wind cold.

Tip #4 The lungs, throat & sinuses don't like to get too dry. Indoor air can be dry due to heating, so invest in a humidifier at home, particularly in the room that you sleep. You may even want to get a little diffuser for your office desk. If your throat gets too dry, try honey tea or pears to help moisten it.

Tip #5 If you catch a chill & you feel it affecting your body, sweat it out in a hot bath, sauna, exercise or drink hot ginger with fresh scallion tea & wrap yourself in thick blankets. Then, sweat it out until the cold is gone.

Tip #6 Keep your neck, upper back & upper chest limber & massage them frequently. These areas correspond to lymphatic drainage of the head sinuses & the immune system. When the neck gets tight & tense, the Japanese call this "kori," which becomes a risk factor & sometimes a cause for other ailments of the head, like sinus colds & headaches.

Tip #7 If your feet are always cold, take daily hot foot baths throughout the winter. You can put a few slices of ginger in the water to help the heat penetrate better.

Tip #8 Sleep & rest more. This may be the single most important & overlooked tip. The body does its most effective self-healing during rest & sleep. As your body is a part of nature, & nature is more Yin during this season, your body craves more Yin time. If you give it more sleep & rest during this time of year, it will give you more energy & health when you need it.

Tip #9 Make a plan to do some outdoor winter activities. There are so many different outdoor winter sports and activities that you can choose from. The key is to find one that seems fun or exciting to you. Get more clothes or invest in better winter gear if that helps get you outside. Then just do it! Don't overthink it or listen to your doubts. The body loves exercise & fresh air.

Tip #10 Take Vitamin D+K and zinc regularly. This may not be a Chinese Medicine tip, but it's been shown that almost 100% of Canadians are Vitamin D deficient in the winter. Since Vitamin D is important for immunity & many other health functions, it's recommended that everyone take at least 1000 IU per day. Also, soak up the sun at every opportunity! You may also want to get regular red light therapy during these dark months.

Tip #11 Use herbs to fight pathogens. You can carry some cold-fighting herbal formulas with you on hand in case you feel you are exposed to something. Get Quiet.
Peace means quiet. If we all want peace, why in the world is there so much commotion all the time? There’s not only external noise, but seemingly incessant internal thoughts and noise as well.
If you want peace, learn the art of getting quiet. Sitting quietly with yourself is a great way to just start listening to your own thoughts, and letting them wash over you without agenda. Live From the Inside Out.
When thinking about how to live your life and asking yourself the hard questions, keep conscious of the fact that you can live your life from the inside out.
When you do, your heart and mind will align and the result can be a life full of peace and joy, despite outward circumstances.

If you’re not into meditation, that’s fine. You can choose to find a quiet spot and simply sit in silence. Getting out into nature also helps many people get better in touch with their true selves.

Haven’t you ever seen some beautiful landscape and peace just swept over you? In those moments, you weren’t worried about anything. You were just basking in the wonderful glory of creation.
The more we can bask in those types of feelings, the more at peace we will feel.
Even if you don’t know exactly what you want out of life, if you simply know that you want to experience as much peace as possible, that’s a good start.
Aim to become mindful of the moments where you feel peace inside. Even if it’s just for a few seconds while you’re petting your cat, become mindful and offer gratitude for it.
You may be surprised at just how much more peace you feel throughout the days when you make this your practice.

3. Go Deeper Into Your Stillness.
From here, go deeper into your stillness.
Take time regularly to just bask in your own quiet and calm. The toughest part about any sort of personal or spiritual growth is actually taking time to “do the work”, even if the work means sitting in silence.

I understand it’s not easy and within a few minutes, you may feel super bored. I’ve been there.
However, if you’ll keep at it, focusing on what’s behind that blackness behind your eyes, you’ll begin getting a sense of a peaceful presence that you’ll appreciate.

You will feel less stressed, less anxious, and you’ll have more to offer others. We can add value to humanity as we are led by balance and pour out from a full cup.
Today, take some time to be with yourself.
Even if it’s just five minutes in the morning and five minutes in the evening, try it out. Be with love. Breathe slowly, relax your entire body, and bask in the stillness.
Do this every day and see what happens in your life. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

4. Recognize the Power of Undoing.
The bigger picture for us may not be pounding the clock to get more hours of work in.
Freedom and peace may not come from “doing” more. However, it can come in the being present with stillness within. It can come with making a decision to live a balanced life and regularly check in with yourself to be sure you’re not too busy.

I don’t just mean physical busyness either.
We can be overly mentally busy too. This can keep us from getting still with our real selves and dealing with things we may be unconsciously avoiding. In this talk, Charlie Massy OA draws on his decades of farming experience and research to propose new ways of farming that don't harm the land and the planet in the way industrial agricultural practices can.

Along the way, he shares some of his own personal journey of learning and change, and explains how he came to be the regenerative farming advocate he is today. Charles gained a BSc in Zoology at ANU (1976), before going farming and developing a prominent Merino sheep stud business (Severn Park). He still manages the family’s grazing property in NSW while teaching at universities and consulting in the fields of Merino breeding and landscape design.

He has chaired and served as a Director on a number of national and international review panels and boards of business, research organizations and statutory wool bodies, involving garment manufacture, wool marketing, R&D, molecular genetics and genomics.

Charlie’s concern about land degradation and the Anthropocene crisis led to him completing a PhD in Human Ecology (ANU) in 2012. This resulted in his new book, Call of the Reed Warbler:
A New Agriculture – A New Earth (UQP Sept. 2017) concerning the emergence of a regenerative agriculture in Australia and cause for hope This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community."
Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Listen to the talk here:
How Regenerative farming can help heal the planet and human health.

ALL IN A DAY - and it begins IN YOUR HEAD

https://www.terigentes.com/blog-posts/all-in-a-day-and-begins-in-your-head

https://www.terigentes.com/blog-posts/all-in-a-day-and-begins-in-your-head#comments

Uncategorized

       Whole-self wellness. While artificial light somewhat changed our sleep patterns, most of us sleep during the darkness of night and live life under the brightness of the sun.
But there’s more to it than that. So, let’s dig into it.

What Does Sunshine Do for Mental Health?
Sunshine can literally improve your mood and your mental health. In other words, we’re not living as long as our grandparents did, despite all of our technological advancements.

How did we get here?
One answer lies in the disturbing parallels between Big Pharma and Big Ag — two industries that wield enormous power over our health. The relationship between our food systems and our healthcare systems is no coincidence. Food is being produced in ways that undermine our health and keep us dependent on pharmaceuticals.
The business models of both the pharmaceutical and agriculture industries thrive on treating symptoms rather than addressing root causes, ensuring a continuous cycle of dependency.

Pharmaceutical companies profit immensely by focusing on symptom management instead of curing underlying conditions. Chronic diseases like diabetes or hypertension, for example, have become lucrative markets, as patients often require lifelong medication rather than one-time treatments.

Big Ag mirrors this approach. Farmers are locked into systems reliant on synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and genetically modified crops — inputs they must repurchase every season. Rather than restoring soil health or embracing regenerative farming, these practices perpetuate chemical dependency. (And fail to provide truly nutritious, health-promoting food).

Both industries promise solutions but often create new problems.
In agriculture, pests develop resistance, leading to the need for even stronger chemicals. In healthcare, one medication’s side effects often require another drug to manage.
This cycle of dependency benefits corporations but leaves the rest of us sick, overmedicated, and struggling. The unfortunate reality is that the power over our health is concentrated in the hands of a few corporations.
Understanding this connection between Big Ag and Big Pharma is the first step toward change. By supporting alternative systems — whether regenerative agriculture or holistic health practices — we can begin to reclaim our well-being."
                                                                                              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Information such as this enables us to make more informed decisions beginning with asking more questions about where food comes from and what's causing the ever increasing rises numbers of diseases! As an awake physician, one of the most depressing aspects of my work is seeing patients, especially the elderly, weighed down by numerous prescriptions that frequently do more harm than good.
Many commonly prescribed medications are given to patients despite the risks often outweighing the benefits.
Acid-suppressing drugs are among the worst offenders, with their overuse fueled by a lack of understanding about the crucial role of stomach acid throughout the body or that acid reflux is due to too little stomach acid (as the stomach acid of digestion gives the stomach’s opening a signal to seal and not let any more food in).
Deficient stomach acid causes many chronic health problems (e.g., macular degeneration, a myriad of autoimmune disorders such as asthma, and less overt forms of reflux that cause many common diseases of the ears, nose, and throat such as allergies,coughs, and sinusitis).
Acid blocking medications cause a variety of severe side effects, including a 19% increased risk of death and a comparable increase in cardiac events, kidney or liver disease, numerous infections, and bone damage.
Thankfully, many safe natural treatments can effectively address acid reflux and many of the complications of a chronic stomach acid deficiency.  For example, as I showed here, statins provide a negligible benefit (e.g., at best, taking them for five years extends one’s lifespan by 3 to 4 days) but create significant side
effects such as severe muscle pain and cognitive impairment for 20% of users.
This tragic situation is best demonstrated by a 2007 study...
...which showed that simply discontinuing the least necessary prescriptions resulted in a 23% reduction in the death rate and an 18.2% decrease in hospital referrals.
Sadly, since the trend in medicine is always to have people on more drugs, data like this has had no effect on the practice of the over prescription of medications.
Over the years, I’ve asked dozens of holistic doctors which widely prescribed drugs they consider to be the most unnecessary and dangerous, and in addition to statins, three frequently make their list:
NSAID painkillers (discussed further here)
SSRI antidepressants (discussed further here)
Stomach acid blocking PPIs (the focus of this article)
Acid Reflux
Your stomach contains acid that it uses to digest food (primarily by turning on powerful enzymes that digest protein).
When the stomach is digesting food, the acid should stay inside the stomach, but sometimes, it leaks back up into the esophagus (your throat) because the muscle that seals the top of the stomach (the LES) fails to fully seal. Since stomach acid is irritating, it frequently creates an unpleasant condition known as heartburn when it re-fluxes into
areas like the throat that are not resistant to its acidity.
Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a very common condition, estimated to affect 20% of adults (ranging between 18.1% to 27.8% of adults in the USA), is slightly more common in women, and those numbers have been gradually increasing globally.
In addition to overt acid reflux, another condition is silent reflux (laryngopharyngeal reflux), where minor reflux occurs without causing overt heartburn.
It is often the root cause of a variety of other symptoms, such as:
Allergies
Asthma and reactive airway diseases
Burning in the mouth or on the tongue
Chronic sore throat
Ear pressure and ear infections
Frequently feeling like you need to clear your throat(and sometimes cough)
Post-nasal drip
Sensation of a painless lump in the throat
Sinus issues
While most medical conditions are overemphasized to sell more prescriptions, silent reflux is not, and it is quite rare for me to meet an otolaryngologist (ENT) who recognizes this is the root cause of their patients' symptoms. Fortunately, silent reflux is highly responsive to lifestyle changes (e.g., not eating at night), and those measures frequently produce profound improvements for patients.
Why Stomach Acid Is Essential for Your Health
Subtle distortions frequently occur in science, creating a false conception of reality that conveniently allows a profitable industry to exist. For example, stomach acid is largely viewed as unnecessary and thus frequently possible to justify eliminating with acid suppressing medications. In reality, it has numerous vital functions:
• Protein digestion -
Amino acids, the building blocks of the body, are obtained from protein. Without sufficient acid, proteins can't be properly digested, leading to significant nutritional deficiencies, impaired energy levels, mood or cognitive function,
and food sensitivities from undigested foreign proteins entering the bloodstream.
Sterilizing the stomach -
Acid is a barrier to harmful microbes, preventing them from entering and infecting the digestive tract. Those with low stomach acid are thus at higher risk for severe foodborne illnesses and hospital-acquired infections.
For example, one study found that ventilated patients who received an acid blocking medication (which was not as powerful as the newer PPIs) were twice as likely to develop pneumonia and 60% more likely to die from hospital acquired pneumonia.
Similarly, a Clostridium difficile infection is the leading cause of hospital-associated infectious diarrhea. It has a considerable impact on the length of a hospital stay and its costs — those on PPIs were found to be twice as likely to develop this condition.
Furthermore, one large review of septic patients found those on PPIs were 4.3%more likely to die than those not on PPIs.
Note:
The largest review that has been done so far of PPIs and COVID-19 found PPIs increased a COVID patient’s risk of dying by 77%. Many of the issues with acid suppression are best illustrated by how they alter the normal bacterial flora of the gut. For example, to quote the manufacturer of one PPI:
"Like other agents that elevate intra-gastric pH, omeprazole [Prilosec]administered for 14    days in healthy subjects significantly increased the intra-gastric concentrations of viable bacteria. The pattern of the bacterial species was unchanged from that commonly found in saliva. All changes were resolved within three days of stopping treatment."
Nutrient absorption --
Many (myself included) believe one of the primary causes of all the chronic illnesses we see today are widespread deficiencies of vital nutrients. Much of this deficiency comes from:
◦ Industrial agriculture (which nutritionally depletes the soil)
◦ Chelating herbicides such as Roundup (which sequester essential minerals like manganese)
◦ Food processing (which removes many vital nutrients from food)
◦ Impaired absorption of the nutrients that remain.
Note:
Manganese deficiency is a root cause of many debilitating conditions, such as hyper-mobile connective tissue disorders (which make individuals much more sensitive to environmental toxins — for example, patients with ligamentous laxity ar emuch more vulnerable to vaccine injuries). Fortunately, with appropriate manganese supplementation, these conditions often significantly improve.
Poor stomach acid levels hinder the absorption of critical minerals and vitamins. Beyond making individual amino acids available, certain vitamins (e.g., B12) depend upon stomach acid for absorption, and many minerals bound to plants (e.g., iron)will only separate and become absorbable in an acidic environment.
Note:
This is a key reason why stomach acid deficiency is particularly problematic for vegetarians.
• Digestive signaling -
Acid stimulates the release of hormones (e.g., secretin and cholecystokinin) and enzymes necessary for digestion. These signals ensure that the pancreas releases the right enzymes to continue breaking down food and that the digestive system functions efficiently. Impaired acid levels can disrupt this process, leading to issues like indigestion and floating stools.
"Why would Nature expend so much metabolic energy to provide each one of us at birth (and until at least age forty) with an ample supply of stomach acid and pepsin if it weren’t really necessary for digestion?"
— Jonathan Wright MD
The Problems with PPIs
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the most powerful acid suppressing medications on
the market. Initially, PPIs were meant for treating very high stomach acid levels or
severe GI damage and rare debilitating diseases (e.g., Zollinger–Ellison syndrome), and their usage was limited to 4 to 8 weeks. However, once the heartburn market was
recognized, PPIs were heavily promoted, and now over 15% of Americans take them.
Since stomach acid is critical for health, prolonged PPI use has been linked to serious
health risks such as:
   Increased mortality --
Studies show a19% increase in overall risk of death.
   Cardiac events — A 28% increase in the risk of major cardiac events.
   Kidney and liver disease --
Higher risk of severe kidney disease and worsened liver conditions.
   Bone health --
Increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
   Infections and deficiencies --
Higher risk of infections like pneumonia, nutrient absorption issues, and low magnesium levels.
   Dementia --
A 33% increase in dementia risk.
Significantly increasing the risk of macular degeneration
Conditions Linked to Impaired Stomach Acidity...
Teri's note:
This informative article is from a resource I often use.
