GOMASIO – your healthy alternative to table salt!
Gomasio is a combo of dulse (a mineral rich sea vegetable) and sunflower or sesame seeds was introduced to me a few decades ago and fast became an essential. The dulse hosts a healthy dose of iodine with a satisfying salty taste and the toasted seeds a delish nuttiness. While consuming sea vegetables may seem frightful to some, combined with toasted sunflower or sesame seeds and even those with the faintest of taste-buds are sure to love this healthy salt alternative. Make this ASAP and let me know what you think of it. I’d love to hear from you.
INGREDIENTS
Approx. 3 cups loosely packed dulse
½ cup sunflower or sesame seeds
DIRECTIONS
Top your salads, sprinkle in wraps, salad rolls… with a heaping teaspoon for a nourishing and healthy protein, fat, and mineral-iodine rich salt alternative. Store in a dark cool cupboard or refrigerate for up for 2 – 3 weeks.

- Side, condiment
- Prep time: 5 minutes, plus overnight drying time and approx. 5 minutes toasting time
- Yield - Approx. 2/3 cup
- Vegan, gluten/soy/nut free
INGREDIENTS
Approx. 3 cups loosely packed dulse
½ cup sunflower or sesame seeds
DIRECTIONS
- Lay dulse out in a thin layer on a ceramic or parchment lined baking sheet, place in the oven with the light on, close the door and leave over-night or until dry and crunchy. Alternatively use a dehydrator as directed.
- Meanwhile toast the seeds in a large skillet over medium heat until bronzed. Let cool.
- Using a coffee grinder whirl the seeds until crushed – only a short time otherwise they will become pasty or butter like. Pour into a glass jar.
- Next whirl dulse until well crumbled and add to the sunflower seeds. Cover the jar and shake well.

TERI’S TIP:
- An alternative is to use raw or toasted sesame or pumpkin seeds in place of the sunflower seeds, or combine all three for an eclectic treat. The toasted versions are a fragrant treat while the raw seeds have the added benefits of increased digestive enzymes so make a batch of each.
- Raw or toasted Nori leaves can be used in place of or in addition to the Dulse. Both are alkaline super-foods from the sea and abundant in trace minerals including iodine and calcium.
