I’ve intended to launch this blog for some time yet so many other projects seem to win my attention. There are many aspects to my work that call to me and I tend to take them all on. With a little pressure/encouragement from my tech support hero to get a post out I share with you some musings I penned a few nights ago as my initial launch blog isn’t quite ready. So while technically this is my first post here let’s just say it’s not my blog launch.
Reflections on doing what I love,
no matter what!
I just love what I do in my world of whole-self wellness. Truly I feel like this is what I came here to do and I know I am blessed. Making this area my lively-hood feels like I’m in perfect alignment. That all said there are moments when I must admit it’s hard being the researcher learning what I do about health and wellness. I’ve long said; “once you know, you can’t not know” and so it is. I have all of this information and long to share it. When situations arise on most any kind of lifestyle and mindset related health issue and let’s face it, that’s the majority of them – 80 plus percent according to the scientific research – well I’m in a dilemma…
That was hard to take at first until I realized we all tend to struggle with issues that call us out on areas and behaviors we know aren’t good for us. It isn’t easy facing our ‘stuff’ and we all do have stuff. Like it or not some of our behaviors or beliefs don’t serve us well and we know it yet habits can be hard to hack. We humans like the familiar; it feels safe, even when it’s taking a toll on our well-being.
So I’ve learned to bite my tongue and refrain from saying much.
I merely listen, offer compassion and remind them I care. Oh yes, it’s hard. I so often want to speak up yet the me that likes to be liked fears I’ll be the ‘dreaded health geek’ that family and friends tolerate at best, avoid at worst and talk about when I’m not around. “Don’t mention that to Teri, you’ll get an earful.” I don’t want to be that person.
Yet, there’s also the, me, with the ego that says tell them first before they hear it from someone else. Ha ha – yes it’s true and reminds me of a scenario years ago with a family member. For ages I’d be advocating the necessity of sufficient water consumption. And I do mean ages. Then one day seemingly out of the blue, a conversation and announcement with said family member – “Hey Teri, I just read about the importance of drinking more water so I’m doing it and I feel so much better.” (Picture me banging my head on the wall!). Yes, that old age adage, you have no voice in your own back yard rings true so I must let it be.
Mostly in my dilemma to speak up or shush up there is the somewhat selfish me with a vested interest in the people in my life and I truly want them to thrive in great health. Witnessing health impairing behaviors and habits is tough to overlook without making some loving effort to intervene yet I truly do my best to restrain myself unless advice is solicited. Successfully much of the time, yet not always and my sister Diane will attest to that. Still, I know I’ve gotten so much better. Again, ask Diane.
It’s strange how offering guidance to strangers is more common and well received than sharing it with family and friends. My most captive audiences are quite often people I don’t know along with my clients, followers and referrals. A crazy irony it seems except for the fact that I truly do want to see everyone feel and live as well as they can no matter who they are.
It’s taken me some time to ‘get’ we all navigate life as best we can and it’s not my job to do it for anyone else. All in good time for all of us! Each of us gets to choose our own approach to life and that’s a good thing.
That all said, I must add, for all of you ready to take better care of yourself I am here and your success’ are passionate intention. Reach out and together we will map out the best approach for you beginning where you are and transitioning to where you want to be. Choosing focused self-care is one of the best gifts we give to everyone for when we thrive we enable others to as well.
A ton of blessings your way - always and all ways,
Teri G
